Young people at an Ipswich football club are close to reaching their fundraising goals after help from a power company.

The Under 10 Witnesham Wasps received a £ 250 team sport award from UK Power Networks, the company which distributes electricity in the east of England.

Employee Norbert Nyandebvu, who volunteers as a coach and photographer and whose son Tyrell is the team captain, applied for the team award which will be spent on a new kit, training material and equipment.

Nyandebvu, based at the company’s Fore Hamlet office, said: “As with other sports clubs, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken an impact on us and not playing for three blocks now has been very frustrating for the boys. .

“It’s a tight-knit team that has been together for three seasons now. They all live and breathe football, so it’s disappointing not to play even though we all understand the reasons for it.

“During this latest lockdown, coaches have tried to keep morale up with regular video and fitness workouts the boys can do at home.

“The club is really grateful for the funding because it’s the kind of donation that keeps everything going, because every year we need new kits for the guys as they grow up and we always need them. ‘additional training equipment. “

The Team Sport Award program encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and aims to promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork and the development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the system was set up. In 2020, over 60 teams were awarded a combined sum of £ 15,500.
