The Company’s SPIDERMAN Technology Offers New Defenses Against Chemical and Biological Threats

RESTON, Go., September 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a FORTUNE® 500 science and technology leader, recently won a prime contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for its Custom Protective Biosystem (PPB) program. With this award, Leidos will develop technology that reduces the need for bulky protective gear while increasing defense against existing and future chemical and biological (CB) threats. This three-phase contract, lasting five years, at cost plus lump sum, has a total ceiling value of $19.3 million.

DARPA’s PPB program addresses the nation’s need for lightweight, adaptive personal protective equipment for military and healthcare personnel. The recent pandemic has highlighted this challenge on a global scale.

With this award, Leidos is launching a combination of innovative, robust and flexible platforms known as SPIDERMAN (Smart Protective Integrated Dynamic Ensemble for Reactive, Multifaceted Agent Neutralization). The technology comes in the form of lightweight protective materials and fabric protection countermeasures. It allows protection against CB threats without prior knowledge of the nature of the agent. The goal is to create new and improved ways to deal with different, emerging and uncharacterized threats through advanced technology.
